Leading Self, Leading Others

Great leadership starts from the inside out.

How a manager leads themselves – their thinking, their responses, their habits under pressure – shapes everything about how they lead the people around them.

At Upwrd, we talk a lot about leading self and leading others because we believe they’re inseparable. You can’t consistently lead others well if you’re not clear on how you lead yourself. And self-awareness without the skills to translate it into better leadership of people is only half the picture.

Both sit at the heart of everything we do – woven through our programmes, our coaching and our approach to culture and team development.

Leading Self

Leading self is about understanding how you think, how you respond under pressure, and what shapes your behaviour as a leader. It’s the foundation that everything else is built on.

Managers and leaders who understand themselves well make better decisions, handle difficult situations with more composure, and are more consistent in how they show up for their teams. They know their strengths and their blind spots – and they do something about both.

This is why we start with self-awareness in everything we design. Not as a goal in itself, but as the foundation for everything that follows.

Leading Others

Leading others is where that self-awareness gets put to work. It’s the conversations, the decisions, the standards held and the behaviours role-modelled every day.

The managers who lead others well are the ones who can have the conversations that matter, who coach their teams rather than creating dependency, who hold accountability without making it personal, and who create the conditions where people do their best work.

That’s the capability we build – across all our programmes, at every level of leadership.

How We Develop Both

Leading Self, Leading Others

Whether you’re looking at Ignite for managers building their foundations, Elevate for experienced leaders developing the strategic and cultural capability senior leadership demands, The Leader Lab for experienced leaders working through the complexity of their real challenges, or 1:1 coaching for individuals who need focused personal development – leading self and leading others runs through all of it.

  • Ignite builds the mindsets and behaviours that underpin both – starting with self-awareness and building into courageous, consistent leadership of others
  • Elevate develops both at a senior level – deepening self-awareness through Insights Discovery and coaching, while building the strategic and cultural leadership skills that shape how others lead
  • The Leader Lab creates the space for experienced leaders to understand their own patterns and challenge the way they’re showing up for others
  • 1:1 Leadership Coaching gives individuals the space to go deep on both – understanding themselves and building a plan for leading others more effectively
