Case Study: Building Human-Centred Capability for the Future

Client Overview

BMT, a global design engineering and consulting firm, recognises that technical excellence alone isn’t enough to thrive in today’s complex world. They wanted to invest in the human skills that underpin effective leadership, collaboration, and performance - particularly within their hybrid and matrix working environment.

Their aim? Equip graduates and line managers with the confidence, mindset and behaviours to lead with empathy, influence without authority, and communicate with clarity.

Partnering to Shape Culture & Leadership

Our Engagement

We designed and delivered two bespoke learning programmes, both rooted in the principles of emotional intelligence, coaching and psychological safety - and both shaped for the realities of BMT’s working culture:

1. Line Management Programme – ‘Ignite’

Delivered face-to-face in BMT’s London and Bath offices, the Ignite programme supported two cohorts (40 managers) transitioning from technical experts to people leaders.

The experience focused on:

  • Leadership styles and self-awareness
  • Emotionally intelligent leadership (empathy, active listening, coaching skills)
  • Time management, prioritisation and ‘letting go’
  • Giving effective feedback
  • Navigating matrix structures and influencing without authority

A mix of theory, practice, peer dialogue and self-reflection created a space for powerful learning and lasting mindset shifts.

“A really helpful and motivating course to enable better outputs and delivery as a line manager but also across projects/programmes.”
– Senior Project Manager, BMT

2. Graduate Development Programme

This blended programme (face-to-face and online) supported two cohorts (40 graduates) across disciplines like design, engineering and consulting. Our focus was to complement their technical training with the foundational human skills required to build a thriving career:

  • Emotional intelligence fundamentals
  • Adapting communication styles
  • Non-verbal communication and body language
  • Active listening and presence

The result? Graduates entered the organisation better equipped to collaborate, connect and contribute confidently across hybrid teams.

The Impact

BMT is nurturing a new generation of emotionally intelligent leaders—people who can lead with clarity, compassion and courage.

  • Line managers are becoming more self-aware, confident and capable of supporting and challenging their teams
  • Graduates are entering the business with core communication skills and an ability to navigate complexity with empathy
  • Cross-functional peer relationships are being strengthened, helping to embed a culture of coaching and psychological safety across the matrix

“If there’s the option to join future sessions, I’ll be at the front of the queue.”
– Design Manager, BMT
